Gut microbiome

The gut microbiome is very complex and consists of a huge amount of microorganisms, mainly bacteria. It is network organ that connects with all kinds of parts of the body and thus can have a huge impact on well-being and health.

Thanks to our superior analytical technology, NL-Lab is able to fully measure and 96% correctly identify the gut microbiome. This gives you a better understanding of the situation and what, if anything, can be done to restore balance.

We offer gut microbiome screening for:

The division of our offerings for practitioners

Dysbiosis packages

Traditional dysbiosis research only indicates whether the gut microbiome is in balance (eubiosis) or out of balance (dysbiosis). At NL-Lab, we have developed an improved model for dysbiosis. Our model has four different types of dysbiosis, each with their own characteristics and possible treatments.

These affordable packages are well suited as an initial inventory of the gut microbiome or when monitoring over a longer period of time.

Pro Dysbiosis

This package provides insight into whether the gut microbiome is in balance, based on the two largest groups of bacteria in the gut microbiome. In case of imbalance (dysbiosis), you get information on the type of dysbiosis, the degree of dysbiosis, characteristics of the sample and therapy advice to treat that specific type of dysbiosis.

Pro Dysbiosis Monitoring

A series of three Pro Dysbiosis tests that provide insight into the development of the balance of the gut microbiome over a period of time. After the 2nd and 3rd measurement, the report is completed with information on the development of the dysbiotic status compared to the previous measurement(s).

The general gut microbiome packages.

The general gut microbiome kits measure 100% of the gut microbiome and identify 96%. This gives you a complete picture of the composition of the gut microbiome. There are three different packages that are increasingly comprehensive.

Pro Basic

This package gives you insight into the composition and activity of 96% of the gut microbiome. In addition, you will gain insight into the degree and type of dysbiosis, diversity of the microbiome, colonization resistance and appropriate therapy advice for any abnormalities found.

Pro Expert

This package offers everything from the Pro Basic package, plus additional bacterial analyses (Akkermansia and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii) and insight into the role of the gut microbiome on: probiotic function, mucus function, gut membrane protection, gut wall permeability, and possible gut wall inflammation.

Pro Master

Our most comprehensive package, on top of the Pro Expert package, offers even deeper insights into intestinal membrane protection, intestinal wall permeability and possible intestinal wall inflammation (slgA, calprotectin). In addition, butyrate production, LPS production, oxalate reduction and sulfate reduction are measured.

Optional: In combination with these packages, it is possible to have the influence of the gut microbiome on a number of gut-related conditions examined. Depending on the package, there is an additional charge per condition for this.

The gut microbiome packages for specific target groups

These packages, like the general gut microbiome packages, measure 100% of the gut microbiome and identify 96%. This gives you a complete picture of the composition of the gut microbiome. There are three different packages specifically tailored to different types of gut microbiome: those of infants, children and the elderly.

Note: The distinction between infant and child is not based by us on age, but on circumstance: from 3 months after a baby has switched to solid food, we recommend the Pro Child package. Senior with us is from about 70 years of age.

Pro Infant

This package is optimized for examination of an infant's gut microbiome. Among other things, the analyses focus on the lactic acid bacteria in the gut microbiome. Intestinal microbiome examination for an infant is particularly useful in cases of (suspected) colic and eczema. In addition, monitoring the gut microbiome provides insight into changes in the microbiome and/or there is an increased risk of developing autoimmune disorders.

Pro Child

This research package is specifically aimed at a gut microbiome that is still developing. The interpretation of the research therefore uses reference values appropriate to a child's gut microbiome.

Pro Senior

As one ages, the gut microbiome also changes. The Pro Senior package consists of analyses specifically focused on this microbiome. For the interpretation of the research, reference values appropriate to the intestinal microbiome of a senior citizen are therefore used.

Optional: In combination with these packages, it is possible to have the influence of the gut microbiome on a number of gut-related conditions examined. Depending on the package, there is an additional charge per condition for this.

The specific gut microbiome research

This research focuses on a specific component or function of the gut microbiome.

This research can be ordered separately or as a supplement to other gut microbiome packages.

Infection-causing bacteria

Includes research on the bacteria that cause 92% of all classical intestinal infections, namely: Proteus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella aerogenes, Pseudomonas, Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter jejuni, Listeria, Yersinia enterocolitica, Helicobacter pylori, Clostridium perfringens and Clostridioides difficile.

Extensive parasite research

With periodic intestinal complaints, there is a high probability that a parasitic infection is the cause. Our study is the most comprehensive parasite research on the market and identifies the 16 species responsible for more than 95% of parasitic intestinal infections worldwide.

Quality of digestion

Complete insight into the quality of digestion. This examination is suitable in cases of osmotic diarrhea, steatorrhea, pancreatic insufficiency and impaired liver function. The research includes the determination of fat, carbohydrate, protein and water content and pancreatic elastase in the stool.

Yeasts & Fungi

This package examines whether elevated amounts of yeasts and/or fungi are present and how active they are. Any presence of Candida albicans and Aspergillus is specifically noted in the report.

The gut microbiome research on demand

This research focuses on a specific component or function of the gut microbiome and can only be requested after consultation with NL-Lab.

If you are interested, please contact us.

Gluten hypersensitivity

Indicates food hypersensitivity and specifically toward celiac disease. Package includes determination of anti-transglutaminase, anti-gliadin and histamine.

Immunogenic bacteria

This research is requested in cases of suspected reduced resistance. These include: chronic bronchitis and other recurrent inflammations of the throat, nose and ears. The package includes the bacteria belonging to the groups Enterobacteria and Enterococcus.

Occult blood

Determination of the presence of occult blood in the stool sample. Nb. This test can only be requested by BIG-registered physicians and applied to people who are not in the age range of 55-75 years.

Probiotic Testing

We can test probiotics for presence of bacterial species, numbers of bacteria and activity of cells present.

Pro Biotics Personal

The results of this study can be used to request personalized probiotics from third parties and provides insight into the composition and activity of the gut microbiome. In addition, you will gain insight into the degree and type of dysbiosis, the diversity of the microbiome, the permeability of the intestinal wall and any inflammation of the intestinal wall.

Optional: gut-related conditions

In combination with the general gut microbiome packages and the packages for specific target groups, it is possible to have the influence of the gut microbiome on gut-related conditions investigated.

These include conditions directly related to the gut (proximal conditions such as, e.g., PDS, leaky gut, colic) and conditions that cross the various intestinal axes (distal conditions such as, e.g., depression, asthma, eczema).

Depending on the package selected, there is an additional charge per condition examined.

NOTES. These tests provide insight into the possible contribution of the gut microbiome to the development of, or maintenance of, a specific condition. The test result is not a diagnosis and should be assessed by the practitioner.

The gut-related conditions

  • ADHD
  • Aerobic overgrowth (SIBO).
  • Asthma
  • COPD
  • Depression
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Eczema
  • Hypertension
  • Colic
  • Leaky bowel
  • ME/CFS
  • Kidney stones
  • Obesity
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
